PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria – April 17, 2025
The Rivers State Government has demanded a refund of ₦300 million from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), following the association’s decision to relocate its 2025 Annual General Conference from Port Harcourt to Enugu.
In an official statement released on Wednesday and signed by Hector Igbikiowubo, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the State Administrator, the government condemned the NBA's move, describing it as a breach of trust and a violation of prior agreements.
The state expressed dismay over what it termed a "unilateral decision" by the NBA, stating that the move contradicts the mutual understanding previously established between both parties. The statement also described the relocation as unethical.
Rivers State further rejected the NBA’s recent characterization of the ₦300 million payment as a "gift," insisting the funds were explicitly tied to the hosting rights of the 2025 conference. The government emphasized that the sum was provided with the clear expectation that the conference would be held in Port Harcourt.
As of the time of filing this report, the NBA has not issued a formal response to the refund demand.
